Story: I did break the law once, and it was in another Mel’s Diner. It was the one on Ventura Boulevard down in “the valley” (LA-speak) and I was having dinner with my old friend Michael one evening when Topher Grace and Anne Hathaway walked in.

For celebrity encounters you can’t beat the three Mel’s Diner locations in LA- one is on the Sunset Strip where I saw Charlize and Stuart, another is right smack dab in the middle of Hollywood itself at Hollywood & Highland, and this particular one down on Ventura may be somewhat removed from all of the main hubbub and social buzz of the entertainment biz, but you’ll still get a trendy crowd in there on weekends and if you sit long enough you’ll eventually see a face you’ll recognize from either the big screen or the little one. On this particular evening I had to explain to Michael who Topher Grace was because he’d not seen “That 70’s Show” (still hasn't seen it to this day) and so wasn’t familiar with the character of Eric Forman, and he hadn’t seen Anne Hathaway in the short lived series “Get Real”. Neither one of them had done a film yet so they weren’t well known, but Topher was a bit better off than Anne since his series was going strong and hers had just been cancelled.

They walked up to the counter and ordered something to go, then as they took a temporary seat by the register I was contemplating whether or not to say hi to them, since Michael and I were sitting at a booth right by the front door and I could literally have grabbed them on their way out, if again, I’d felt like getting arrested. By the way, I never do, just so you know. Please note that had they been seated at a booth just having dinner and minding their own business, I would have minded mine and obeyed the LA celebrity approaching law. However, on this particular evening they grabbed their brown take out bags and headed for the door, so they were basically approaching ME. So I spoke up-

“Hi Topher!”

He stopped, smiled, extended his hand for a shake, and replied-

“Hey, how ya doin? What’s your name?”

“Dave, and this is my friend Michael”

He shook hands with Michael and then introduced us to Anne, who looked less than thrilled that he had stopped to talk to us in the first place. Except for the name exchanging, I was kind of feeling like I’d known him for about ten years and hadn’t seen him in a long time- that’s the way he made it seem. Of course, I complimented him on his work on “That 70’s show”, for which he thanked me, and I complimented Anne on her recent series, to which she rolled her eyes in exasperation and said to Topher, “Come ON, let’s go..”

Topher shrugged and said, “Gotta go, I guess.. take it easy, nice meeting you guys”.

As they headed out the door Michael said, “Who are they again?”

It’s a very odd thing how a one time impression can make or break a celebrity in one person's view- since that encounter I’ve maintained that Anne Hathaway must be a stark raving psycho bitch, when maybe all along she was just having a bad night and considered Topher a cheap date for taking her to a diner, and on top of that, getting it to go. On the other hand, maybe Topher isn’t so sociable after all, but was just looking for any excuse not to get back in the car with HER- who knows? I should have asked him to join us, in which case he might have given her cab fare and then we’d have made it a boy's night out.

About a month after that Dorian and I popped into that same Mel’s, since we lived pretty close and used to frequent it quite often, and Topher was back but this time in the company of two other cast members of “That 70s Show”, Danny Masterson and Mila Kunis, plus a few more people.

This time I obeyed the law.
