Plot: Dan Foreman is headed for a shakeup. He is demoted from head of ad sales for a major magazine when the company he works for is acquired in a corporate takeover. His new boss, Carter Duryea, a business school prodigy who preaches corporate synergy, is half his age. While Dan develops clients through handshake deals and relationships, Carter cross-promotes the magazine with the cell phone division and Krispity Krunch. Both men are going through turmoil at home. Dan has two teenage daughters, Alex and Jana, and is shocked by his wife's unexpected pregnancy. Carter, in the meanwhile, is dumped by his wife just as he gets his promotion. Dan and Carter's uneasy friendship is thrown into jeopardy when Carter falls for, and begins an affair with Dan's daughter, Alex.

The studio wanted someone from the cast of "That '70s Show" for the role of Carter and had originally given it to Ashton Kutcher. Ashton dropped out due to creative differences, and Topher auditioned and got the part. Topher had auditioned four times for the role, and had to convince producer Paul Weitz that he was right for the role, by highlighting his raising by his father, a businessman with sharp negotiation skills.
