FILMOGRAPHY | MONA LISA SMILE (2003)

Set in 1953, Mona Lisa Smile tells the story of Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), a young art history professor at Wellesley College, an all-female campus with a prestigious reputation for academic excellence. Unfortunately for free-minded Berkeley grad Watson, her teaching stint in Boston is during a less-progressive time that finds her students, Betty Warren (Kirsten Dunst), Joan Brandwyn (Julia Stiles), and Giselle Levy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) more interested in nabbing a good husband than achieving scholastic and intellectual growth. Watson challenges her students and the Wellesley faculty to think outside of the current mores of the community and redefine what it means to be a success.

His role: 22 years old Harvard student Tommy Donegal is Joan’s fiancι, a jovial and outgoing young man who has already been accepted into grad school, and has a bright future ahead. Very much in love with Joan, Tommy isn’t exactly against Joan’s attending Yale Law – as long as she has his dinner on the table promptly at 5pm. Tommy's not a bad guy, just a product of his time.

Topher Grace: "I walked in the first day to the set...I know Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles a little bit from L.A., and I had never met Julia Roberts. So I was meeting her, and they were both saying hi — not to mention there were like 100 female extras. I think I turned to the director, who was the only other male there, and I said, 'Ca-ching!,' the only words to describe it. It was amazing."
