Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth), a grocery clerk living in rural West Virginia. But even a small-town girl can have big dreams, and Rosalee's is to someday...somehow...meet her big-screen idol Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). The "somehow" arrives in the form of a contest - the grand prize: a date with Tad Hamilton -- and the "someday" is now. Rosalee wins, much to the chagrin of her best friend and co-worker Pete (Topher Grace), who is deeply, hopelessly - and secretly - in love with Rosalee.

[Angelica quickly comes running over]

Angelica: Someday Pete, when I ask what you desire you will say: you Angelica, you.
Pete: Yeah, I think we just take the beers for now.
[Cathy and Rosie are laughing]

Angelica: Well you got to win her back.
Pete: Believe me I have tried everything.
Angelica: Well what did she say, when you told her you loved her?
Pete: Ok maybe not everything.

Kate Bosworth: "When I moved out to Hollywood when I was 18, we saw each other at a party. He came up to me and said, "Are you Kate? Did you once live in Darien?" It's such a small town. ... I was cast first in this movie and then the word came down that they wanted to cast Topher Grace as my hometown buddy, Pete. It was fated, almost. It's one of those weird coincidences that makes you think, like, there's some kind of master plan."

Topher had previously worked with Ginnifer Goodwin in Mona Lisa Smile (2003) and was the one who introduced her to director Robert Luketic for the role of Kathy.

Topher and Kate Bosworth both lived in Darien during their childhood. Kate was on the same soccer team as Topher's little sister and he even chaperoned one of their field trip.
